What to look for (our honest tips)

  • Bring a UV flashlight. A $15 365nm light reveals fluorescent minerals most people walk right past.
  • Ask for the back room. Dealers keep their best material under the table. A polite "got anything special?" works wonders.
  • Sunday is deal day. Nobody wants to pack inventory home. Prices soften on the last afternoon.
  • Smell the "amber." Real amber smells faintly of pine when warmed; plastic smells like chemicals. (Seriously.)
  • Buy the stone, not the story. "One of a kind" is the most common phrase at any show. Judge with your eyes and a loupe.
